Europe & Asia
Florence fennel, a wonderfully ornamental vegetable, is grown for its swollen leaf bases or ‘bulbs’ and edible leaves. Both Bulbs / leaves are edible.
It is a hardy, perennial herb with yellow flowers and feathery leaves. The flower size is 15 cm.
Harvest starts from 35 days
Florence fennel grows best during winter season and needs an open, sunny site. Prepare a seedbed in fertile, well-drained soil, adding plenty of well-rotted organic matter before planting. It thrives on warm, moist, fertile, sandy soils.
Sow directly into the soil, 15 mm deep in rows 30 cm apart, thinning to 30 cm apart in the rows. Feed with high potassium fertiliser every two weeks once established.
